My mother used to be depressed and she got antidepressiants and after she got off the antidepressiants i went into really deep depression. is it possible that i got it from my mom?Is it possible to get depression from a parent who has previously had it??
It is possible that you have inherited a mental health issue from your mom. Currently the mental health community believes that most people born to a parent with mental health issues has an increased chance of developing a mental health problem of their own at some point in life. Obviously the chance would be even greater if both parents have such problems. However, there is no guarantee that anyone will develop any mental disorder. Most do, but some do not. There is also no promise tha a person with no family history will not experience some type of mental issues. It's really a luck of the draw type of deal. The good news is that most mental health disorders can be well controlled with proper treatment. This involves a number of therapies including Anger Management, Behavioral, Drug and Cognitive Thinking Therapies or a combination of them. Most are Talk Therapies, but Drug Therapy is most common and most effective. It takes time and a little patience to find the right drug, combination of drugs and the correct dosage of each to achieve a proper balance in mood while limiting the severity of side effects. Be patient it is possible to live normally.

TerryIs it possible to get depression from a parent who has previously had it??
NO, and if anyone tells you that, they are insane. Life is what you make it, you can find good out of every situation. I had a rough life and............................ if I focused on my parents mental status I would probably be on drugs or dead. You have the choice to create your own destiny so, keep your head up and be your own person.
yes it can be genetic problem even ur grand ma had it u could have a depression too.
but do not stick this to ur mind, that if mum had this so i have it now ,and i cant be okay again!cause its gentically.
no, u can become okay , plz be more patient and strong and try to tell urself i can over come with this problem without using medicines.
try to go out alot, i know for the ppl who have depression its too hard to socialize and goin out alot, but go with the person who u really love her/him and be with freinds, go swimming, give ur self time and go on with this way.
if u saw u didnt get any result then start see a theraphist .
take care of urself
dont forget be strong
I think so
Depression is the lack of certain chemicals in the brain, so, yes, it can be genetic.
Yes, depression is inherited. My mother had clinical depression, but didn't get diagnosed until she was in her 70's. I just remember growing up in a house where mom was always crying, then when I had kids, the same thing happened. Now we are both on meds, and feeling better about our lives.
The memories of living with a depressed person is probably causing your depression.
Depression is NOT CONTAGIOUS. But yes, you could have get it from her. It's normal that living with somebody who suffers from depression, unless you are strong enough you may end up with the same pesimistic and sad views. But if ur mum overcame it, You can too.
only if youre hanging around that person too much
...It's not contagious, no. Genetic, maybe, but it's not a flu, you can't ';catch'; it.
certain mental disorders where depression is one of the symptoms do seem to have a higher percentage rate in children whose parents suffered from the same disorders
the current belief is that depression is hereditary, so it is possible. but you cant ';catch'; it from someone like you can the flu. because she went off her medication doesnt mean you ';got'; it from her. you may have just been predisposed and it was poor timing, or maybe the stress of her going off her medications affected you somehow.
it can be genetic and also can get it by seeing depressed ones. I tried to look for some explanations about the source of the illness but I only found this, hope it helps ;)
The answer is a two fold, yes. The tendency to develop a mood disorder is not only hereditary but there's the fact that you were living in the environment with someone who was depressed. Depressed people who are NOT being treated for their illness deal with those around them differently. Most of my childhood my mother was so caught up in her own ';stuff'; that there's no way she could be there for her kids. We grew up afraid of her, and afraid of everything- plus our self-esteem was worthless because of the way she treated us.
In my early 30's, I was finally diagnosed bipolar. Meds helped me, but the harder part was getting over the emotional scars from being raised that way. My mother (in her late 40's after we were pretty well grown and out of the house) pulled out of her depression, found Unity and positive thinking- and honest goodness is worse in many ways now.
not in the sense that its contagious, but yes in the sense that its genetic, both my parents have had depression, and i sure do. thanks a bunch mom %26amp; dad!
